The Importance of “Why” for ADHD Brains

How many times have you been asked, “Why do I have to do all this homework if I can get As on all the tests?” “Why do I have to write a report about Moby Dick if I’m going to be a scientist?” “Why do I have to write a research paper if I want to be a musician?”

As parents, what’s our typical answer to those questions? Because.

Because is a really bad answer for ADHD brains. If they don’t know why the need to do something, they’re not going to do it.

You need to help your teen find the “why.” Why is she going to go for a certain career path? Why might she consider college? It’s how her ADHD brain gets engaged to get motivated.

Learn more in this video, from the ADDitude webinar titled “How to Find Your Path: A Roadmap for Choosing a College, a Career, or Something Different,” with Rick Fiery, M.S., MBA.
