What does a functionally organized home look like? For families with working parents and school-age children, it’s most essential (and difficult) to organize rooms and backpacks. For remote workers, organizing the home office is essential for your day-to-day work life. What doesn’t work: Closets filled with children’s sports equipment, school supplies, and decades-old clothing if you’re an empty nester or older adult with ADHD.

Embracing the season of life you’re in right now is one of the most creative and freeing things you can do to make your home optimally functional. In this webinar, you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of how to organize your space for each phase of life
  • Learn how to set realistic expectations so that everyone in the household can contribute to organizing spaces
  • Hear practical, easy-to-implement ideas for quick and functional changes in your kitchen
  • Learn how to make a plan for refreshing your bedroom spaces for each family member
  • Understand how to carve out a defined workspace for each family member, even if you do not have a home office or spare bedroom

Partners in healthy, enduring romantic relationships typically experience sexual satisfaction as part of their strong connection. But as many couples living with ADHD know all too well, forgetfulness, procrastination, and other traits associated with ADHD can take a toll on relationships and on sex.

Sex therapist Ari Tuckman conducted a survey of 3,000 people with ADHD and their non-ADHD partners about their sex lives. He asked about levels of satisfaction, frequency, infidelity, and much more. Among his findings: people with ADHD feel things more intensely and experience more sexual eagerness than do their non-ADHD partners. Bridging these differences, and other flashpoints, can strengthen a relationship.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How ADHD can affect your sex life and relationship
  • Strategies to make time for intimacy and why this is important
  • Why sensitivity can make intimacy challenging for the non-ADHD partner
  • Approaches to help couples build trust for each other
  • How treatment for ADHD improves intimacy

Educators today understand how a student’s behaviors related to ADHD manifest in the classroom much better than their counterparts did 25 years ago. But too many teachers still fail to recognize the academic and social struggles that can plague students with ADHD inside and outside the classroom.

For many students with ADHD, it’s difficult to imagine anything worse than a contemporary classroom: six-hour days filled with expectations of sitting still, following endless instructions, completing tedious tasks, and navigating social situations. It’s not surprising, then, that academic outcomes for some of these students are worse than they are for students without ADHD.

For too long, educators have focused almost exclusively on reducing symptoms (e.g., fidgeting, interrupting, losing focus) in the classroom, but this approach does not necessarily improve a child’s academic outcomes. Evidence-based interventions and supports to reduce specific ADHD-associated impairments and to build adaptive functional skills are needed for long-term academic success — but not always provided in IEPs and 504 Plans. Approaches to improve a student’s social relationships with peers are often left out of such accommodations, but they are equally important to a child’s success.

In this webinar, educators and caregivers will learn:

  • How the core features of ADHD are often magnified by the expectations in classrooms, and how this makes it harder for students to experience success in school
  • About the limitations of some approaches that focus exclusively on a student’s symptom management and ignore other areas of impairments
  • About strategies, supports, and approaches that can help students with ADHD flourish

ADHD impacts the genders differently and in significant ways.

Men with ADHD and emotional dysregulation may be quick to anger and prone to outbursts at real or perceived slights. They may also be less likely to advance in their careers than neurotypical men. As a result, these men with ADHD may feel shame and embarrassment. Understanding these unique challenges, and the solutions that address them, is important for any partner, colleague, or caregiver to understand.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The ways in which ADHD is experienced differently by men, affecting their personal and professional relationships
  • The problems with working memory, anger, and emotions — including feelings of shame and guilt — common in men with ADHD
  • Evidence-based, practical solutions designed to address these challenges
  • The ways in which men and their partners can better navigate these differences

Adolescents with ADHD are more likely to experience bullying for a variety of reasons, including missing social cues, blurting out in class, struggling academically, having difficulty making friends, displaying a lack of empathy, being clumsy or having poor impulse control, and associating with peers who are more likely to engage in bullying. Students in middle and high school may even believe they bring bullying on themselves due to their inappropriate behavior.

The effects of bullying can be devastating. Adolescents who are bullied experience negative mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety, that can last into adulthood.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • Research suggesting adolescents with ADHD are more likely to experience bullying
  • Predictors of bullying
  • How to identify the signs of bullying
  • Strategies to prevent further bullying
  • Approaches to use if your child is the bully

Can you join the military with ADHD? The answer is not always clear. ADHD has been considered a risky diagnosis for military recruits due to its symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, all of which could prove dangerous in military operations. Some individuals diagnosed with ADHD have successfully obtained waivers, allowing them to serve in the military, but only if they discontinued stimulant medication use for 24 months in advance.

Dr. Brandi Walker, clinical Army psychologist, will explain current recruitment requirements for people with ADHD, how a military environment can affect ADHD brains, and what aspects of the military’s mission (i.e., occupational, tactical, academic, and social) should be considered by hopeful service members who are also neurodivergent.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About recruitment practices as they relate to people with ADHD
  • About military policies regarding ADHD medication restrictions and treatment interventions
  • How a military lifestyle can affect people with ADHD and co-occurring conditions, including anxiety and depression
  • How a structured military environment can lean into the strengths of a recruit with ADHD, enhancing military effectiveness

Adults with ADHD are up to six times more likely than are their neurotypical peers to have Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which is characterized by extreme sadness, loss of interest, and mania. Not only is MDD more prevalent in adults with ADHD, but the disorder can have an outsized effect on women and girls who have both conditions. MDD is associated with an earlier age of onset, a longer duration, more severe impairment, a higher rate of suicidality, and a greater likelihood of requiring psychiatric hospitalization in girls with ADHD.

When treating depression in patients with ADHD, it is critical for clinicians to recognize a patient’s feelings of worthlessness, which, as one study points out, were directly related to suicidal thoughts and planning in adolescents.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About MDD and other mood disorders that are highly comorbid with ADHD, including bipolar disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and emotional dysregulation
  • About symptoms of mood disorders and how they co-exist with ADHD
  • About new and alternative treatments for MDD, including medication, neurofeedback, and neuromodulation therapy, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and esketamine treatments
  • Which therapies are in clinical trials that may hold promise
  • About strategies to help people with depression and mood disorders

Pregnancy is magical and excruciating. Exciting and overwhelming. Demanding and the calm before the storm.

This is true for most people who experience pregnancy, but it’s doubly true for those with ADHD, roughly 96% of whom cease taking stimulant medication while pregnant and nursing. On top of that, the new and unrelenting demands of caring for an infant, while experiencing changing hormone levels and disrupted sleep, can amplify ADHD symptoms and bring a new level of difficulty to daily functioning.

For women who discontinued ADHD medication use during pregnancy, in particular, coping with raw emotions, a new routine, and a new baby may feel next to impossible and lead to comorbid anxiety and depression. It is important for clinicians treating perinatal women with ADHD to consider the benefits and risk of stimulant use in this critical time of transition.

In this webinar, women, partners, and professionals will learn:

  • About the intersection of ADHD symptoms and neurobiology in perinatal women during and after pregnancy
  • About the risk analysis of stimulant use versus discontinuation in pregnancy and postpartum
  • How to anticipate the demands of early motherhood and risk for depression and anxiety in women with ADHD
  • About the impact of hormones on ADHD throughout the lifespan, and the interplay with medication

When kids with ADHD struggle socially, people often assume they are “missing social cues.” In truth, many kids and adolescents struggle due to lagging social executive function skills.

Social executive function skills power the “operating system” of social interactions. Thus, if your child struggles socially, we can be relatively sure they have lagging social executive function skills. This webinar will provide you with an understanding of the social executive function skills that cause the most trouble for kids with ADHD, why parents have the most important role in helping their child to improve social executive function skills, and what works and does not work to help build these skills.

In this webinar, you will learn the following:

  • How to recognize lagging social executive function skills in your child
  • How to differentiate social anxiety from lagging social executive function skills
  • What exercises and activities bolster social EFs in children and teens with ADHD
  • What hurts, rather than helps, kids’ social skills
  • How to guide without helicoptering as your child focuses on social EFs

“Why Adults with ADHD Abandon Medication — and How to Improve Treatment Outcomes” [Video Replay and Podcast #396] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-medication-for-adults-adherence-problems-solutions/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-medication-for-adults-adherence-problems-solutions/#respond Fri, 14 Jan 2022 17:49:49 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=221993 Episode Description

ADHD medication has been the cornerstone of ADHD treatment since the condition was first recognized more than a century ago. The stimulants and the alpha agonists are some of the most effective treatments in medicine and, if properly fine-tuned, they have virtually no side effects.

Yet the vast majority of adults who start ADHD medication stop taking it within a year. It isn’t that ADHD medication doesn’t work. The response rate is more than 85 percent. The reasons for poor follow-through have to do with the nature of ADHD itself. People forget to fill the next prescription and never get back in treatment. In addition, many adults with ADHD are reluctant to take ADHD medication because of persistent myths surrounding its safety and side effects.

Here, we offer strategies for overcoming these obstacles to ensure more effective and consistent symptom management. These techniques make the difference between success and failure for the majority of people being treated for ADHD.

In this webinar, you will learn the following:

  • How research confirms the effectiveness of medication in managing ADHD symptoms
  • How to fine-tune ADHD medication to avoid side effects
  • Why is it so difficult for individuals with ADHD to stick with medication
  • Education and strategies for overcoming medication reluctance and lack of adherence

Do you hesitate to reach out to old friends — uncertain whether they’re eager to hear from you? Do you seldom make new friends — apprehensive about risking rejection or just too exhausted to invest time and energy in social endeavors? Is speaking in public so uncomfortable that you avoid ordering take-out at your favorite cafe?

Many adults with ADHD struggle with fears of embarrassment, rejection, or criticism and hold back from participating in the relationships they truly desire. Still others are worried about missing conversational cues, and then being mocked or excluded. During these past two years of pandemic isolation and restrictions, social anxiety and rejection sensitivity have increased across the board. In other words, you may feel alone, but many others are sharing this experience.

In this webinar, Dr. Sharon Saline — award-winning author, international speaker, and consultant — will help you learn to participate in social situations with more confidence and less self-criticism. She will explain how social anxiety works and offer tools for reducing your discomfort while improving your communication skills. You will learn how to initiate and maintain friendships, manage rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and improve your ability to connect with partners, peers, children, and even love interests. By developing resilience and shifting your mindset, you’ll be prepared to head out into the world with courage, authenticity, and concrete techniques.

In this free, hour-long webinar you will do the following:

  1. Understand how social anxiety and rejection sensitivity dysphoria impact adults and older teens with ADHD
  2. Learn to overcome limiting beliefs and behaviors with practical tools based on cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness
  3. Develop effective strategies for managing social situations and personal relationships with ease and confidence
  4. Improve communication skills to engage in clear, appropriate, and meaningful conversations

“I Didn’t Mean It!” How ADHD Affects Communication — and Strategies to Improve It [Video Replay and Podcast #393] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-communicate-better-adhd-strategies/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-communicate-better-adhd-strategies/#comments Tue, 04 Jan 2022 16:08:39 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=220138 Episode Description

ADHD is more than an attention disorder. ADHD impacts a broader cognitive skill set called executive functions. Executive functions act as the brain manager, coordinating, planning, and executing everything from home schedules and organization to health routines to school assignments to communication in relationships. ADHD can undermine all of this — creating stress in daily routines, straining relationships, and leading to poor health outcomes.

One of the most under-discussed aspects of ADHD is its effect on communication — with children, spouses, coworkers, and friends. In this webinar, we’re review the impact of ADHD and executive function challenges on communication, as well as practical solutions for communicating with more ease — and clarity and less reactivity.

In this webinar you will learn how

  • Executive function challenges and ADHD symptoms directly affect communication
  • ADHD and communication shortcomings affect classroom learning, behavioral plans, and relationships
  • Emotional reactivity related to ADHD can damage relationships
  • Effective communication techniques can help overcome ADHD’s negative effects on daily living

“Build Your ADHD Emotional Resilience: Strategies for Adults Who Feel Things Deeply” [Video Replay and Podcast #388] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/intense-emotions-adult-adhd-strategies/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/intense-emotions-adult-adhd-strategies/#respond Mon, 03 Jan 2022 21:05:23 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=219819 Episode Description

Sometimes, adults with ADHD react with intense emotion when things don’t go according to expectations. Even minor frustrations and interruptions can cause us to overreact with an outburst or meltdown, making it hard to complete tasks and maintain relationships. What happens then? How do we rebound and recover? How do we return to and finish the task we started? How do we repair the damage to our relationships?

We can’t always stop intense emotions from spilling over, but we can learn to minimize the damage they cause to others and ourselves. Adults with ADHD can learn to calm their runaway emotions and find ways to express their feelings in a healthy way. In this webinar, participants will learn how to “bounce back” from emotional outbursts, gain insights about their emotional dysregulation, and develop emotionally healthy responses in the future.

In addition, participants will learn

  • Techniques for monitoring emotions
  • A two-part strategy to release emotions effectively and restore a sense of wellbeing
  • Ways to express “big” ADHD emotions in a healthy manner
  • How to repair personal and professional relationships damaged by emotional outbursts
  • Proven strategies for practicing emotional resilience

“Regret and Resolve: How Women with ADHD Can Transform the Challenges of a Late Diagnosis” [Video Replay and Podcast #392] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/women-with-adhd-post-diagnosis-challenges-solutions/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/women-with-adhd-post-diagnosis-challenges-solutions/#comments Tue, 14 Dec 2021 23:48:03 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=219337

Episode Description

Middle-aged women with ADHD face all of the typical challenges of aging — declining health, family concerns, career stresses, tough decisions about moving or downsizing — plus a wide range of ADHD-related complications. They feel like they don’t get anything done — they’ve been busy all day, but they have nothing to show for it. They live in disorder and chaos and have trouble managing their daily lives. They feel socially isolated. Many report that friends have moved away or that they haven’t been able to make friends after moving to a new community. They feel vulnerable. Many are divorced, and their adult children with ADHD often can’t provide support.

In this webinar, Dr. Kathleen Nadeau will share the first-hand experiences of older women facing the regrets and challenges of a later ADHD diagnosis — and how they overcame them. The stories and winning strategies are based on Nadeau’s interviews with more than 75 women with ADHD, age 60 and older. Her findings will be shared in her upcoming book, Still Distracted After All These Years, to be published in 2022.

In this webinar, women will learn to:

  • Accept, understand, and develop strategies to reduce ADHD-related struggles
  • Better understand life-long social problems and find ways to break out of social isolation
  • Manage the parenting burdens related to adult children with ADHD who haven’t become self-sufficient
  • Develop a plan to move out of destructive or dysfunctional circumstances and/or relationships
  • Create a support network to increase self-esteem and build a fulfilling life.
